I once installed a peace of software and just skipped by the EULA (end user license agreement). My mistake, it emailed everyone in my address book after installing.

I wrote to the company to complain, and the told me I agreed to let the software do that when I accepted the EULA. What a load of crap.

Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Database - Special Report

Does your sunscreen work? An investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreen products finds that 4 out of 5 contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don\'t adequately protect skin from the sun\'s damaging rays. Some of the worst offenders are leading brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena.

The new EWG database allows consumers to compare sunscreens on different characteristics--without scanning labels for complex chemicals. Overall, Badger SPF 30, Peter Thomas Roth Titanium SPF 30, and Lavera Sunscreen Neutral SPF 40, received top marks. This does not that mean they are perfect, cautions Houlihan, but that they will do the best in keeping you sun safe.

The Power of Suggestion?

So I was browsing some videos, and I came across this one called \"Covert Hypnosis\". Now, I know a little bit about hypnosis and one of the \"cardinal rules\" is that you can\'t be hypnotized unless you want to. So I blew this off almost as fast as I read it. Especially when I went to the website and it was one of those \"submit your email here\" to learn more type of things

*Then I watched the video* and my opinion changed almost immediatly. Did the hypnosis work on me? Hmm..

I felt quite enlightened after watching this video, though I\'m not sure I would call it hypnosis, as much as manipulation. I know it has happened to me. I would get all frustrated about something (or someone) and walk in to talk to him/her about it. Within 20 minutes I would start feeling re-assured and better so I would walk back to my desk. Then 20 minutes after that I would think, wait a minute - what just happened here? Not only did I not get my problem resolved, I was actually \"made\" to feel better about the bad situation I was in. Has this ever happened to you?

Maybe it\'s just natural charm, or maybe it\'s something else - I\'m not sure. Some people definitly have an uncanny ability to convince others of total hogwash. After watching this video I can see more clearly now how it is they do it. Perhaps it is not intentional, perhaps they can\'t explain how they do it, but they do. It does seem we can be influenced (unconsiously?)

I suppose if you are unaware you are doing this - it is somewhat acceptable as natural charisma, but if you know you are doing this to someone, actively manipulating them to get what you want is it really ethical? and is there anyway to defend against it.

I suppose, when I think about it, this type of thing is everywhere, mostly in advertising and is similar to propaganda. In the end You\'ll have to decide for yourself.

Privnote - send notes that will self-destruct after being read

Here is an interesting idea. Every watch Mission Impossible..This note will self destruct in 10 seconds?

Want to send self destructing notes to others over the web. It\'s a pretty simple concept, go to the site and enter your note, it will give you back a link to send to your friend (one time only). When they view it, it will be destroyed and will be unreadable by anyone else.

Maybe not *perfect* security but I think it\'s an interesting idea.

Every so often the Lirc module (the infrared remote) is updated, but it stops my remote from working.

Not sure if this is a bug or not, what seems to happen is the latest version is not compiled with support for my remote, so I have to re-do these instructions (link below) to get it working again.

It only takes a few moments, but it can be hard to find the instructions, so I\'m blogging here for safe keeping.

sudo nano /etc/lirc/hardware.conf

Make sure LOAD_MODULES is =true.

Also, add your module to the line that is MODULES=\"\".

For the mceusb2 driver, this would be lirc_mceusb2

sudo m-a update,prepare
sudo rm /usr/src/lirc*deb
sudo m-a clean lirc
sudo m-a a-i -f lirc
sudo depmod -a

About Concussions - What they are and how to watch out from them

Here is a nice reference piece on concussions and symptoms to keep an eye on if you think you or someone you know may have suffered a recuent head injury

A concussion occurs when the head hits or is hit by an object, or when the brain is jarred against the skull, with sufficient force to cause temporary loss of function in the higher centers of the brain. The injured person may remain conscious or lose consciousness briefly, and is disoriented for some minutes after the blow. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 300,000 people sustain mild to moderate sports-related brain injuries each year, most of them young men between 16 and 25.

Real Time Satellite Tracking

Here\'s an interesting site if your into Satellites. It appears to track in real time various satellites and positions them on a google map. You can actually see the little satellite icon moving across the earth.

I\'m not sure how there getting the data to do this, but you can check several items over the earth including the international space station.

So next time you see one of those fast moving stars in the sky, you can check this site out and see which satellite is passing over your area.

Bored? - Try StumbleUpon

So I\'ve never been a big fan of all these toolbars you add your your browsers, I recently blogged about the Alexa toolbar, and now I\'m about to blog about StumbleUpon. It\'s Weird, I know

The StumbleUpon toolbar is very interesting. You sign up for an account, and download the toolbar for firefox or IE. It adds a \"Stubmle\" button. As you press it you are taken to (initally) random websites. However as you rank each site, it seems to keep track of your preferences and starts sending you to more pesonalized sites. Plus you can add your own intersting sites as well which is then shared with others.

Definitly something worth trying, if you just don\'t know where to go on the Web. If you add it, please add me to your friends.

I\'m TheStumbleKing.stumbleupon.com

Towards a Greener Work Environment

Small, simple changes can have a big impact on our life, and the world we live in.

This statement is true for many things, especially our environment. Using re-usable cups, having a blue bin at work, and yes even working from home once in a while instead of commuting in our car to work can make a big difference, if we all work together for a common goal.

Here are a few ideas from bp.com \'The greencurve\' on how to have a greener workplace.

10 Big Myths about copyright explained

With recent changes to copyright law, I felt it best to go back to the basics. In this article by, Brad Templeton, he identifies common myths about copyright and gives a clear picture of what is copyright and how it works in laymans terms.

The article was orginally written in 1994 and updated in 2004 but many of the things still hold true especially with regards to terms such as \'fair use\' and public domain.

A great reference when you are trying to remember \'is it okay to copy this?\'

Monday Warm--up: Complete the Pattern

Beleive it or not - Recognizing patterns is one of the earliest \'intelligent\' functions that we develop in early childhood.

It forms the basis of how we learn about the world, we expect certain things to remain constant, other things to change, and to be able to function we need to be able to differentiate between the two. We need to make educated guesses of what comes next.

When a baby or toddler sees its mom taking its cup to the kitchen sink, he/she learns the answer to \"what comes next\"

In todays warm-up I ask you to complete the pattern. Follow the link below and look at the 4 grids. Can you determine the pattern - How was it created, what would a 4th grid look like?

Tip: Those of you with kids just starting school might have a better chance. Show this to your kids and see if they can figure it out ;-)

Enjoy !

By now, you should all have realized that Microsoft has released it latest
operating system \"Vista\". Orginally codenamed \"CE-ME-NT\". This latest version promises to deliver more decreased productivity then ever before.

An operating system so overblow they\'ve chopped it up into 6 different
versions, none of which actually work. At least not until you\'ve spend
hundreds of dollars on upgrades to your system to make it run (somewhat)

The popular new feature is the arrow cursor, that lets you flow through blue
screens, red screens, endless pop-ups ad permission questions all in eye-popping 3D !

Just like in previous versions, Every copy of Vista is covered by Microsoft\'s Gold Standard - Sinkhole of support. Is it any wonder we ask \"Where are we going today?\"

Her name was Sonora Louise Smart Dodd and she lived in Spokane, Washington. Sonora was the oldest of six children raised by their father, William Jackson Smart, when their mother died during childbirth. Sonora honored and revered her father, and while listening to a Mother\'s Day sermon in 1909, she determined there should also be a day to honor fathers.

iHype

Shhh ! I have a secret for you. Do you own your own company, and have recently launched your own website? Many years ago the company I used to work
for launched their website. It took us a long time to build a steady stream of quality traffic to our site. We did search engine optimization (SEO)
had the address on all our business cards, and conducted webinars. We watched our traffic like crazy, an increase in traffic meant an increase in profits
(in theory). But always there was this question hanging over us. What can we do to get more visitors, more traffic?

I was the system admin, and part time web developer. I had some ideas and helped out a little to build traffic, but I figured the real magic was up to the marketing gurus. If only I knew then what I know now.

Today everyone has a blog, and wants to be a reporter. Many of these blogs are very popular and receive lots of raffic. So if you have a new website and want
to get the word and generate a buzz - this is an excellent opportunity. Today we have sites which combine bloggers and business together, and the best way to
maximize this opportunity is to join as early as possible to these programs and get in on the ground floor. iHype.com Launches such a service.

So what does all this mean for you? Simple! Invest your marketing budget into iHype and let bloggers generate buzz for your business automatically. Before the popularity of blogging, there were really only 2 options - a) Emailing webmasters related to your product/service and asking for links and b) Web advertising
which can be expensive. Now it just a few clicks, you can have a large network of bloggers review your products and services and post them to be read by their readers.

There are of course, other similar programs, however, as these sites get popular, they can also get more expensive. Therefore, the best time to get in the begging
so here\'s your opportunity. I\'m sure once you\'ve tried it you\'ll see how much easier than traditional website marketing tactics.

Deal of the week - June 6

Oh how I wish I could own this combo PDA/GPS. This is certainly a cool item. It\'s an ALL-IN-ONE swiss army PDA. I\'ve looked at these things before and they are easiy over $500. But here are some refurbished ones on ebay for 50% of that price. Plus it looks like many of them come with the whole car kit, and accessories.

I\'ve always wanted to try Geo-caching, and this would be an excellent device for it. Plus with bluetooth, I could send my location information from my cell phone (or maybe find my car when I loose it in the parking lot !)

I paid over $300 for my last PDA which did not have the integrated GPS, How much more could they possibly stick in these things anyway.

I really love the \'turn it on it\'s side view and it looks just like any other GPS.

Going GaGa over JaJah

The other day while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, they
happened to mention a service called JaJah so I decided to check it out.

JaJah is a long distance service provider that offers cheap calling ll around the world. Plus, calls are free
between JaJah users up to 150 minutes per week!

Calls are usually made using Voice over IP or (VOIP) technology, but in a differnt way
then other services such as Skype or Vonage.

With Skype, calls are made through your computer, and not through your normal phone. Vonage
calls do use a normal phone, but you need to buy a special adapter and sign-up for their monthly
service plan.

JaJah calls work simply by logging into the JaJah website, and entering the number you want to
dial. The system then calls your local phone (or cell phone!), and then calls your long distance
number and connects the 2 phones together.

I don\'t have to stay on the JaJah site. Once connected, the call does not use my internet
connection so I can shut down my computer and still continue my call

Plus I can use my JaJah account anywhere. So let\'s say I\'m travelling and in a hotel
I can call home from my JaJah account and give the local number of the hotel. Sometimes, I want
to be able to make a long distance call from my cell, but cell company long distance charges are
crazy!. So I can use JaJah on my cell as well.

So currently, I\'m paying about $0.03/minute to make long distance calls, but I can make these calls
free if others are also using JaJah. So why not sign-up and try a few calls and maybe tell a few friends so
that everyone can benefit.

One word of caution though calls are only free to other JaJah users that have been iniated on the JaJah website.
If you start the call from your cell phone it still costs money, but it\'s stil really cheap. Also be
careful if you are roaming with your cell phone, as the cell phone company may charge your extra $ in addition to
JahJah. So there are a few times, like cell phone roaming, where it might still be a good idea to just use
a long distance pay card, but your can\'t beat free calling with no extra equipment or plans right?

Where is the missing ten dollars?

Today\'s quiz teaches us that things may not always be as they seem.

In life, we are often confronted with things that seem so logical. So correct, but we are fooled.

Have you ever been fooled into believing something was true? Just because it sounds right? Logic can be a dangerous weapon when used incorrectly.

Here\'s a quiz to test out just how powerful that can be

Health Insurance vs. Socialized Healthcare

Kevin Freking has written an interesting 7 part article over on ehealthhelp.com.
His article discusses the pro\'s/cons of Health Insurance Plans vs a
socialized system. Freking specifically discusses the various platforms of
the political parties (and differences within the party) of America, and what
they hope to accomplish.

I live in Canada, and we have socialized health care. Although, I am not
very clear on how there health care works. I cringe at the idea of possibly
dying because of an inability to afford health care. Canada is actually in
the process of working out a 2-Teir health system. It is an attempt to leverage
both benefits of health insurance and socialized health care.

One of the drawbacks, we face in Canda (as compared to the US), is very long
wait times in our hospitals. Since health care is funded by our taxes and
available to everyone, it gets a lot of utilization, and certains costs (such
as Doctors salaries may have limits. Regardless, I still feeling extremely lucky
to have our health care system, and I don\'t mind one bit the taxes that go to help
ensure each an every Canadian has the same right to quality health care.

I find it very interesting, that as Canadians attempt to move toward a 2-Teir
heath system, combining both private and public health care. The US system
is working towards helping make health care available to more Americans. I can\'t help
but wonder if we will eventually reach the same conclusions?

I often have a hard time understanding the notion of why \"socialized health system\"
is looked at so negativily. Freking gives us the example of two people working
on an assignment. One person puts in 110% and the other person slacks off and does nothing.
Is it fair, that they should both get similar grades?

My problem with the analogy, is the attempt to compare individual accomplishments
(skills, attitude, knowledge) with health and welfare. Sure some people work harder
then others, does this automatically mean they have more of a right to live and
breath as someone else? Perhaps, they deserve to accomplish more in life, perhaps
they deserve better health, and more happiness. But does a \"slacker\" diserve to die
because of their poor life choices? This seems a little harsh to me. The bigger question
is what about those to are working 100% but just don\'t have the talent as others, or just
has \'bad luck\'. Do these people diserve to die for the cards they are dealt in life?

Anyway, check out Frekings views at the link below. Go Universal Health Care !

Funny Out-Of-Office E-Mail Auto-Reply

Out of Office auto-replies can be great when you are on vacation, and you want to let others know you won\'t be checking your email.

Here 10 great Out of Office autoreplies you should consider the next time you are heading out on vacation (If you have the guts that is)

1. I am currently out at a job interview and will reply to you if I fail to get the position. Be prepared for my mood.

2. You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn\'t have received anything at all.

3. Sorry to have missed you but I am at the doctors having my brain removed so that I may be promoted to management

4. I will be unable to delete all the unread, worthless emails you send me until I return from vacation on 4/18. Please be patient and your mail will be deleted in the order it was received.

For this mornings quiz, we will be testing your visual cognitive skills. These are probaby the are where I have the \'least\' intelligence.

To complete this quiz, you have to be able to construct the various shapes and move them around in your head to try to find out the right solution.

I always scored low on these types of test in school. I am not even good at estimating the size of an object let alone try to move it around in my head.

Of course now with the internet, we live in a much different world, but CB Radio died out long before the internet, what caused this? Will this happen to user generated online content someday as well? Hmm...

A simple Mistake

We all make little mistakes, but sometimes the smallest of these can cost big money. Today\'s quiz is about a very small mistake that resulted in millions of dollars. Try the quiz - then reflect on your daily mistakes and the repercussions they may have.

A new ship had just been constructed, and everything had pretty much gone to plan.

However, near the end of the production, someone spotted that one of the lettters on the small sign displaying the ship\'s name had been put on back to front.

As a result, tens of millins of US dollars had to be spent to correct the error.

Today\'s brain warm up... How could such a small mistake cost so much money?

There are so many worthwhile organizations, how can I keep track of them all and afford to support them all?

So I created the donation database to help. A simple list of organizations that I can visit on a frequent basis and give - on my own time in the comfort of my own home - online.

Anyone can add their favorite cause to my database, and anyone can visit it follow the links and Please Give and help make our world a better place.

I have been waiting to finish this project for some time. I have finally released my first beta version of the donation database.

Closing the Gab in web advertising

In internet affiliate marketing, there are many options to choose from and many types of programs. Undoubtedly the most well known of these programs is known as pay per click. (PPC)

PPC advertising, however struggles with a major problem. Click fraud. Unscrupulous individuals who try to earn money by clicking on their own links (or asking others to do the same).

Other programs are in place today to help combat this problem. Cost per Action (CPA) networks help to combat this problem for the internet marketer.

Until recently, I have found there to be a large Gap between PPC and CPA networks. Where PPC networks are generally open to anyone, CPA networks generally have more strict entry requirements, and less opportunities.

Enter the
Clickbooth CPA Network. I have signed up for this network just recently, and have been very impressed with the service.

Before, I could even register, there was a rather rigorous process to confirm my identity. As a potential advertiser this gives me great confidence in fraud protection because I know the publishers have verified information with the network.

It takes a few days to get approved, you get an email once you are. However, it is important to check your SPAM folder for updates, because it may get incorrectly delivered to the wrong folder.

Once I logged in, I was very happy to find several well known programs, with good payouts. Plus most (if not all) of these CPA were pay per lead. This is an extreme benefit, as many similar programs are only on a cost per sale basis, which can sometimes be harder to obtain.

When I first login, I was greated up front by a box showing me a special sr affiate strategist to my account. Unlike other automated networks, Clickbooth has a very personalized look and feel combined with support to help me on my marketing endevours.

The link below points to a press release where the company is working towards donating money to help end Breast Cancer.

Payment via PayPal, Payment per lead, brands that I know and trust, and personal assistance, what more could I ask for? I look forward to using this network in the future.

Mobile phone tracking

This is a bit scarry. Most cell phones today have built in GPS tracking. This is for E911 services. If you are lost with your cell phone, search and rescue can find you. SunSite satellite has GPS tracking software that allows you to find the location of any phone in the world that is equiped with a GPS reciever. Just enter your number and wham. Should this really be allowed?

Give it a try and see what happens :-)

Purpose Plans and Passion

One of the things, that prompted me to do this weeks podlet was watching my wife fold the laundry. Often times, we are presented with \"mundane\" tasks. Things we don\'t give us a lot of excitement (or any excitement) over doing. I\'m not a fan of folding clothes [I would tend to just leave them washed in the laundry basket] I once asked my wife how she finds the desire to keep folding the clothes. She told me, she can see (and feel) how good it will be when all the clothes are folded and put away, and this motivates her to get it done. This was key to helping me to put this idea together, connecting our passion with our plans and purpose. Thanks for listening.

Think Small

This weeks quiz is about missing the obvious. Sometimes, we struggle to search for a solution, and stare at it over and over, and just don\'t understand what we are missing.

Often times, you just have to turn around and walk away for a while, work on something else, try something new. Then when you come back with fresh eyes, and a new perspective, the answer seems obvious, and you think to yourself, why didn\'t I think of that before.

Give it a try and warm up your brain. Have a good week !

Password Safe

How many user name and password combinations to you have to keep track of?

Password Safe is a nice small utility for windows that lets you easily store and save common password information. Keep all your passwords safe, in one encrypted file and master password.

Some users at companies are forced to change there password every 30 or 45 days, so this will help keep all your passwords organized. Plus the autotype feature can automatically enter your credentials for you..and best of all it\'s completely free.

So if your tight on security (or your organization). This might be the perfect tool for you.

Carrie Underwood is on Tour

Carrie Underwood, (forth season Americon Idol Winner), is currenly tour in the United States. Now, I\'m no music expert and country is not really my favorite. But none the less she does have some pretty good songs. And you have to hand it to her, after winning Grammies, Billboard and American music awards..all in one season. Well she has to be doing something
right.

She also has launched her own YouTube channel, which tends to give credit to
exploting new media. Unfortuanly, you cannot share her videos on other sites
and so far there are only a few that have been uploaded to YouTube. So I don\'t think it is as fully exploited here as it could be.

During her tour, my understanding is she will be travelling along with Keith Urban.

Now, I\'m not a big fan of American Idol, as with most shows, I watched it
more in the early seasons then in the latter ones. I\'m getting a little tired of watching the same old routine between the judges. I don\'t know about you but to me, sometimes it feels a little too scripted.

None of Carrie\'s tour dates seem to indicate any visits to Canada. I have been fairly disappointed with the frequency of tours to the \'outskirts\' of my country. Often times they don\'t sell enough tickets, and the show ends up being cancelled. Some of the sucessfull concerts actually had a lot of people buy tickets on line, only to later try and sell them on ebay for a higher price. Be very carefull, in many situations this can be illegal, plus even if you tried this, there is no gaurtentee you will get back the orginal price you paid.

I remember one example in particular, a sold out show, with tickets showing up on ebay for 200% of the orginal purchase price. What happened? The ticketmaster began selling even more tickets, and no one was unable to unload the tickets they already purchsed, and they lost a lot of money.

Still, if I had to choose, I\'d say buying online, is definitly the way to go, then be one of those \'fanatics\' that stand in a line for 2-3 nights on end, when you can sit in your comfy slippers and buy your tickets from your own couch !

If you\'ve been following her since idol, you\'ll want to get your Carrie Underwood Tickets online
for one of her tour dates. You can find a detailed list at the link below.

Can the state force your marital status?

In this weeks podlets, I rant about my opinions of \"common law\". I\'ve had very strong opinions on this matter. Way back, when I was first staring my first job. I was chatting with a collegue about university, taxes, etc. The collegue was also very opinionated (or at just trying to yank my chain) about how important it was that I filled my taxes out as common law.

Anyway, in this audio podlet, and the article below you can read about my thoughts on the subject, and application of necessary and sufficient conditions for common law status.

Hope you enjoy it.

One of the debates, I often find myself involved in is the idea of \"Common Law\" Marriage.

First of all, let me clear up the first misconception. Being \'common law\' and being \'married\' are not the same thing from a legal point of view.

There are similarities. In Canada, many couples who have declared themselves as common law are guaranteed similar rights and privileges under the law as married couples. Although specific local laws can vary. The basic premise is the same. If you\'re in a loving committed relationship with another individual, live in the same household, you should get the same rights as those who sign a piece of paper and pay for a \'marriage license\'.

Fun Image Editing Ideas

Are the walls of your room covered in posters? I think we all went through that stage right?

Posters are a quick an easy way to decorate our rooms, and they can bring back nice reminders of the time we went to see the movie, with our
friends or significant others.

But, Have you considered you own custom poster? Woudn\'t it be cool if your
face was on the main layout for the next big movie?..Or maybe this is just being conceited?? Maybe you should could make one for you best friend and put
his/her face on it..or make one as a pratical joke?

I no longer put posters wall to wall, but two other ideas that I have been thing of recently. I have some cool family photos that I have
mashed on different backgronds, places I might someday like to visit, [the egyption pyramids], but probably never will. Or perhaps make
one of those \'inspirational\' custom printed posters. You know the one\'s with the cool sayings like \"Imagination: Keep your eyes on the stars and your feed on the ground\", and maybe a picture of me with a thought bubble over my head and a cartoon mouse running in a wheel.

Or perhaps, a good conversation, make it say something like \"Failure..when doing your best just isn\'t enough\" and paste my head (or someone to tease) within it

>

Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling

[Editos Notee: Here is one of my favorite articles about spelling. It was orginally credited to Mark Twain, but there is some debate that it should be attributed to M.J. Yilz]

...

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter \"c\" would be dropped to be replased either by \"k\" or \"s\", and likewise \"x\" would no longer be part of the alphabet.

The only kase in which \"c\" would be retained would be the \"ch\" formation, which will be dealt with later.

Year 2 might reform \"w\" spelling, so that \"which\" and \"one\" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish \"y\" replasing it with \"i\" and iear 4 might fiks the \"g/j\" anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants.

Bai iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez \"c\", \"y\" and \"x\" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais \"ch\", \"sh\", and \"th\" rispektivli.

10 Reasons to Treat Your Mom

Mothers day is just around the corner (at least it is as I write this entry).

Now, in today\'s day and age, we have no excuse for not giving gifts to our moms..you know those women that gave us life, and cloted and fed us, and taught us right from wrong, all while managing a household, and perhaps a full time job?

Today, with the internet and great sites like <A 1800flowers. If you do nothing else, you can use this service and very easily order some pretty spring flowers. Don\'t forget to include a nice little poem and thank-you as well. Literally you are spending 10 minutes of your time at most. 10 minutes of your time to remember you mom for a lifetime of effort.
Here, add a mother day reminder to your calendar right now, so you don\'t forge !

Like most others, I also have to admit, I probably never truely appreciated all the work mothers do, until I had kids myself. I dare you ! Just spend a day alone with your kids and a list of things that \'mom\' normally does, and you will quickly gain a large appreciation for all the work they do on a daily basis.

A day, a single day? that\'s all they get as \'pay\' for all the work. Even if you ordered flowers for them every day of the week. It still would not be enough.

You Let Me Know You Love Me

You let me know you love me
In so many different ways.
You make me feel important
With encouragement and praise.

You’re always there when I need you
To comfort and to care.
I know I’m in your thoughts;
Your love follows me everywhere.

Thank you for all you’ve done
And given so generously.
I love you, my wonderful mother,

Protect Your Wi-Fi Connection

Many people don’t know how easy it is for people to connect to their wifi and steal their internet and bandwidth. Why sharing your home internet with everyone that is near your house if you don’t want them to?

Now, don\'t get me wrong, it is nice to want to be able to share your Wifi, or perhaps you and a few of your neighbours want to get together and share your high speed bill. Wifi can be an excellent way to makes this happen.

But even in this case, it might not be advisible to just let anyone come in, snoop your traffic, steal your information and move on. This is the risk you present yourself with if you are not using proper Wifi security.

Well it is quite easy to prevent this from happening and this article from TheComputerMaster walks you through the necessary steps.

The basic idea is you define a wirless key using a security known as WPA-PSK. Then only give the key to those you trust to access your machine.

Choose a long key to prevent brute force attacks. Don\'t think you are safe using the old, outdated WAP security, or trying to configure mac address filtering. Neither of these give you any real security. Always go WPA-PSK as a minimum for your WiFi needs.

Why English is so hard

We’ll begin with box, and the plural is boxes;
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.
Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a whole lot of mice,
But the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
The cow in the plural may be cows or kine,
But the plural of vow is vows, not vine.
And I speak of a foot, and you show me your feet,
But I give a boot -- would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and three may be those,
Yet the plural of hat would never be hose.
We speak of a brother, and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis, and shim!
So our English, I think you will all agree,
Is the trickiest language you ever did see.

When the English tongue we speak
Why is break not rhymed with freak?
    We say sew but likewise few;
And the maker of a verse
Cannot cap his horse with worse?
    Beard sounds not the same as heard;
    Cord is different from word.
    Cow is cow, but low is low;
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
    Think of hose and dose and lose;
And of goose and yet of choose.
Think of tomb and comb and bomb,
Doll and roll and home and some,
And since pay is rhymed with say,
Why not paid with said, I pray?
We have blood and food and good,
Mould is not rhymed with could,
Wherefore done but gone and lone.
    Is there any reason known?
So in short it seems to me
    Sounds and letters disagree.

How social are you?

\"The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few..or the one\"
- Spock (Star Trek II)
Do you consider yourself a social person? Today we have social networking tools, blogging, instant messaging, emails, cell phones. Everyone no matter where in the world is literally a click away. We are social beings, we enjoy the comfort of others.

But what does it mean to be \'social\'. Is it simply being friendly?. Does he/she with the most friends on facebook win?..I don\'t think so.

Consider the case of my aunt Mary, who is using attempting to raise $5,000 to fight cancer. Here we have, I believe, what it truly means to be social. It is the power of society, to use social networking, and related tools to spread a message, a message to help others, to understand that we live within a complex structure of people.

People, who are just as deserving as you or I, but, who have been dealt a different set of cards in life. When we take time to consider the needs of others, yes that is a start to being social..and when we take action to help others, to help society. When we realize that we are all individuals interdependent upon one another..the world we live within, and the creatures we live with...it is only then that we can truly consider our selves \"social\".

So my challenge is this, instead of trying to have more friends then your neighbor on facebook, or more people in your \'group\'. Take a lesson from my aunt, find a way to use the technology we have today to help fulfill the needs of the many.

Please give, we are all social beings, in a social world, and thus the benefits of giving
will return to you tenfold.

- The law of Tenfold return
Spread the Message -> Join Mary\'s facebook group

Money = Information

Are you the master of information or a slave to it.

Today we live in a world where money doesn\'t really exist. How man of us really look at cold hard cash?

If you like most people today, you probably use a credit card and debit card and are hit with interest or user fees.

The fees increase, but what can you do, you are addicted to the convenience, and you put up with the fees.

So in today\'s world, money is nothing more then information and is subject to the same vulnerabilities all information is. So what does it mean when you money literally flows through the airwaves around you?

A tool is only as good as the person who weilds it

I\'m pretty much all thumbs when it comes to using any tool. Even a hammer, I hit my fingers, but I\'m a pretty good programmer, and I think I write pretty good applications.

Here is an interesting article from secretgeek.net about Workflow software. This is the kind of software that lets the business analyst, designer understand process flows within an organization. It allows us technical folks the ability to design or customize a software solution to meet a particular set of business needs.

Just like a hammer, if used properly, workflow software can be a very valuable tool. Combined with good knowledge and training it can help a business be more efficient and effective.

To often, however, the software may get billed as a magical solution. At the bottom of this article is a funny parady . The \'IF\' server, an excellent example of how a sales pitch can potentially sell thousands of copies of a software product, to the \'wrong\' individuals and end up causing more problems then it is worth.

28 Days in Rehab

Discovery Health produced 4 part series called 28 Days in Rehab.

In this series they follow a group of individuals and their attempts at
Drug Rehabilitation.

Many people don\'t see addiction as an illness. They don\'t understand the compulsion and why it tears down lives and breaks down relationships, leaving you at rock bottom.

The truth is we are all addicts to something, and just any addicts we may not even realize we have an addiction

When you think about it, our minds are conditioned for addication. Chemical dependance is part of our survival mechanism. We all seek rewards, we are motiviated by that \'good feeling\' we get when we do something. We seek out getting a \'rush\' or a \'high\'

Those in
Drug Rehabilitation are the real winners. They have (hopefully) recognized they have a problem, and trying to find a solution. The sad truth is, often these folks don\'t get to rehab until they have reached rock bottom. There jobs, relationships, lives have been torn apart and they are grasping to regain some control of life, only to have an obsession, quick fix high continue to take it away.

The irony is this same drive can be used in a positive way. If we can learn our passion or drive, to direct that same addiction in a healthy way. Replace the old bad habits such as drinking, drugs, gambling, with good habits. We can literally have our cake and eat it too.

This is a 4 part video series presenented in Windows Media format. So you will need windows media player to watch the series, I found it quite fascinating myself.

Everyone deserves an assistant

I\'ve been trying out Sandy, an interesting little (somewhat intelligent) virtual assistant. The account setup is free, and then you get a special email that you can send to Sandy and she will email you reminders and other items that your prompt her to do when you send emails to her or cc her on emails to someone else.

Sandy also connects to Twitter and SMS (phone). I\'m a big fan of AI like things so I\'m interested in how this app works out. If you are the kind of person who likes to have their own personal assistant..but can\'t afford to pay for it, why not give it a try?

I do wonder, if it works well, can I nominate her for an award?

Keeping It Simple

Here\'s a great article by Brad Bollenbach about simplicity. I especially like his comment that \"simple is not easy\".

I love the philosophy, but it takes a lot of pratice to simplify, to make things easily understood. Especially as we grow older and learn more about the world around us or specialize in certain areas, we may loose touch with the simple things in life.

I have often found myself doing things the \'hard way\', but sometimes this is the only way, after I have finished a project, that I truely learn.

Very enjoyable indeed.

A brief history of Internet Marketing

Here\'s some interesting remenecing from David Ledoux from his blog. When I think of the past internet, and I was in university, I sure wish I had the fore thought to buy up some of the .COM domain names. Back in the 90\'s it was over 100 for a domain name (now they can be as little as $6..but can you find a good one). If I had bought say cars.com in 1999, I may have been able to sell if for millions today. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20 right?

I have recently had the chance to review David\'s free 16 page Small Business Death Sentence. He has some interesting ideas, that I am looking forward to trying out.

One tip, when you subscribe to his blog, the first page you go to is HTML version of the story. I didn\'t realize this, after you sign up you can quickly find the link to the PDF version. Once subscribed, he also sends you some interesting videos and freebies that might be of interest to marketeers new and old.

I just love these types of mind reading videos. Do you read the daily horoscopes? Do you find yours to be quite accurate, does this proove there really are psychics out there?

Here\'s a cool video mind reading test. You might want a pencil and piece of paper. When you play the video you will be presented with a series of statements about yourself. Put an check for every statement that is true about you, and an X for every one that is false.

Then ask youself, how well did this video read your mind? If you are impressed, pass this video on the a few of your friends and see how they score.

Then you will know the true secret of horoscopes in the newspaper.

Firefox..You web browser of choice?

There has been large debate on the web, a fight over which is better Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer?

Most people who use Internet Explorer, do not do so as a \"choice\". It is
shipped automatically with most computers, and most computers shp with Windows. People get on, can do there web browsing, it functions, and they never try anythinng different.

Some people like to switch things around and try new things while others will
maintain the status quo until there is a \'pain\' to change. If you are still using Internet Explorer, and have never tried Firefox. Might i suggest giving it a try?

Watching your online personna

We all make mistakes, and I am certainly NO exception to this rule. However, I
am not a largely public figure, and my mistakes are not made widely
visible.

Temptation can be a very powerfull thing. In my role as
a sysadmin there were sometimes requests for me to perform
perhaps unethical activites. For example, installing software
we did not have the approperiate license.

It can take years to buld a reputation, but only minutes for
it to be trashed. You mistakes can easily be spread all over
the internet for anyone to see with a simple google search.

In a previous post on <A Title=\"Read my post about protecting your online personna\" HREF=\"http://www.bwebcentral.com/blog/733\" Managing your online identity, I dicussed
how important it is that your internet presence or image is clean.
The more popular your services, the more clients you have. Just like
a large co-operation you need to keep an eye on your public image to
ensure it cannot hurt you. Often the bigger you are (or your company is)
the more opinions people will have and the more scrunity you will be under.

Let us take for example this wiki about
Dr William Heyward. Here we find a very dedicated individual with
multiple degrees including Johns Hopikns and a very impressive work history.
Certainly, we must acknowledge and apprecaite the work and effort this man has put into fighting the
ongoing AIDS epidemic, including his formation of Quattro Clinical Research devoted to ongoing
research of infections diseases

As I am sure you are aware, the formation of any new venture requires startup expenses
and perhaps the attraction of potential investors. One can rest assured that any
investor would want to research Dr Heyward, his company, and his activites before
potentially providing the necessary funding.

So let us suppose someone does a quick google search of someone\'s name. This might reveal many
details regarding a person (eg: William Heyward). Not all of the results might be flattering comments. Regardless
of whether or not it is even the same Dr. Heyward who worked as the V.P. for International Clinical Research with VaxGen, Inc.
and and spent over 20 years working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

And even if should such search results reveal this is same William Heyward, and reveal
this man\'s mistakes. Is it really fair? Remember there are always 2 sides to every story.

Now let me ask you, if you made a mistake, and it was splured all over the web with no
references to the good you have done, would you try to rectify it? Could you figure out how
rectify it? Is trying to fix your reputation/image ethical. I do not have all the answers but

Understanding Wiki\'s and Wikipedia

What is a Wiki?

In general, a Wiki is web software, that allows people to easily create, and edit webpages by multiple people (or volunteers) in a collaborative way.
The word Wiki itself, comes from the Hawaiian word meaning \"fast\". If you run a Wiki software on your website, it can be a very fast way to create
and edit pages to share with others.

Why are Wiki\'s Useful?

The full power of a Wiki can be seen by one of the post popular Wiki\'s called Wikipedia. This free encyclopedia has grown to well over 2 million articles on
a wide variety of subjects. Perhaps you remember, when you were young, and you parents had that encyclopedia set of 20 or so books on a bookshelf. Or perhaps,
you went to the library to research information for you school project? Maybe you were even one of the lucky ones who had a CD-ROM with the encyclopedia on it.

Now, thanks to the power of the internet and Wiki\'s. You can research all kinds of information quickly and easily.

What are Wiki Problems?

For the most part, Wiki\'s can be edited by anyone, anonymously. Depending upon the wiki quality guidelines and how well they are enforced, can greatly affect
the accuracy of the information presented. Wikipedia is very good at enforcing quality guidelines and a new scan tool (see link below) allows you to somewhat
see what persons/companies are editing Wikipedia entries, possibly in a biased way. So when researching information from a Wiki (or even the internet in general)
it is important to have several sources to backup your findings.

From the link below you can see a list of Wikipedia edits from the IP Address block 198.81.129.0-255. A quick Whois on this IP Address block reveals these IP
addresses are owned by, and administrated from the Central Intelligence Agency. In reality, this only tells us that there are people using computers on the CIA network
making some very inteesting wiki edits We can only surmise the specific reasons why. It could just be employees having fun, or part of a some bigger conspiracy theory. Either way, it\'s kinda of interesting
don\'t you think?

A320 crosswind plan crash

Check out this video of a plane that almost crashes when landing in on a very windy day in Hamburg, Germany.

I\'ve actually heard from multiple people and I am told that the pilot was doing exactly the way he would be trained to maneuver in such a situation. Regardless, though if I were a passenger and felt this happening I\'d be scared out of my seat...literally !

Managing Your Online Identity

Managing your online identity

I have very strong opinions on first impressions, I am an avid believer
of the phrase, \'Don\'t judge a book by it\'s cover\' However, I also realize
that not everyone holds the same belief as me.

In today\'s online social world
we need not only to consider your physical first impression as well as your online
impression.

Are you are familar with the notion of \'googling yourself\'? I am sure
everyone has done it at one time or another. Typed their name in the google
search box and see what pops up. What people may not realize is that many
people are also typing names (perhaps yours) into a search engine to learn
more about a person, perhaps in preparation for a meeting, an interview,
or soon afterwards.

I have recently started using a search engine designed just for this purpose.
spock.com (aka: Spock.com - the best for people search ). It is not like google, it is not a generic search engine,
it is specifically designed for looking up information about others (or yourself)
The link below is to an interesting article on their site about how they can help you manage
your online idenity.

So the next time you are meeting someone for the first time, and trying to figure the right
way to shake his/her hand, ask yourself, will this person be searching for me later?
